Specialization: Materials Engineering

Major: Dental Engineering

Degree: BA Degree in Engineering

Duration: 3.5 years (7 semesters)

 The interdisciplinary character of the curriculum meets the requirements and needs of the European Union and ensures that the graduates have appropriate knowledge and skills used in prosthodontics. In order to prepare students for the work in this field, the best specialists in the field of medical, technical and plastic sciences have been employed by the school. Specialist laboratories, among them a laboratory for the production and processing of metallic materials, have been established. In these laboratories, research is carried out into a new dental alloy. The laboratory of titanium alloys is one of the few in Poland. The scanning microscope in the laboratory of the fundamentals of materials science allows one to observe the structure of a material in a twenty thousand fold magnification. The equipment of the laboratories allows both students from research groups and the department staff to conduct research. Our research results are presented by department staff at conferences both in Poland and abroad.

 

After each year of study, students have a five-week training at dental technicians’ offices both nationally and internationally.

 Graduates of this major have a thorough theoretical and practical knowledge to solve problems related to the improvement of technology and properties of materials used in dental prosthetics, orthodontics, techniques of the reconstruction of the tissues of the face, and techniques of ear prosthesis. In particular, these studies prepare students for the creation and realization of all technological processes used in the production of dentures.

 Comprehensive knowledge in this major is acquired by an extensive study in the fields of medicine, engineering, human sciences and the arts. Students are offered integrated learning of anatomy, physiology, reconstructive plasty (?); materials engineering in physics, chemistry, mathematics, materials science, mechanics and strength of materials with prosthodontics and orthodontics, materials technology with the technique of melting and casting of metals, and baking of ceramic mass supplemented with advanced composite materials and biomaterials. This knowledge enables the graduates to systematically advance in the field of dental engineering. Mastering of specialised computer programmes facilitates students’ proficiency in their field of study. The studies end with a dissertation.

 The graduates of this major receive a degree in engineering and can be employed in specialized laboratories of dental engineering, in research centres engaged in prosthodontics, and in companies dealing with the production of materials and equipment for prosthodontics and dentistry.

 Specialisation: Materials Engineering

Major: Dental Engineering

Degree: MA Engineer of Prosthodontics

Duration: 1.5 years (3 semesters)

 The graduates of the postgraduate programme of the Materials Engineering specialization acquire highly advanced knowledge in the field of materials engineering and engineering material sciences, computer science, computer assistance in engineer’s work, computer-oriented learning about materials, material designing of products and their elements, technologies of the production, processing and recycling of engineering materials, methods of shaping and examining of the structure and properties of the materials. The graduates are prepared for:

  • Creative work in the field of materials engineering and computer science and computer assistance in engineer’s work as well as heading teams engaged in creative work in this field
  • Research and use of specialized equipment used in the examination of the structure and properties of engineering materials
  • Operation of computer systems in computer assistance in engineer’s work in the field of materials engineering
  • Designing of technological processes and management of production in the field of materials engineering
  • Running an independent business and being active in small and medium-size companies
  • Continuing studies in other post-graduate programmes

 The graduates acquire abilities to cooperate with others, lead a team and manage business and design institutions as well as personnel in industrial companies.

In the dental engineering major, students gain knowledge in the fields of:

  • The technique of plastic arts used in prosthetics, implant prosthetics, orthodontics and maxillary traumatology
  • The technology of the production and processing of dental materials and the equipment used for it
  • The techniques of the designing of prosthetic and orthodontic constructions and their production
  • The newest technology in prosthodontics, implant prosthetics and orthodontics

 The knowledge acquired in the course of studies is multidisciplinary. The curriculum comprises courses in materials engineering, dentistry, arts and the humanities. The studies end with a dissertation. The graduates receive an MA degree in engineering.

 The graduates are prepared for jobs in:

  • Industrial companies producing, processing or using engineering materials, in particular materials used in prosthetics and dentistry
  • Small and medium-size companies, including companies trading in materials used in prosthodontics, dentistry and equipment for their examination
  • Laboratories of dental engineering
  • Research institutions and research and development centres
  • Institutions dealing with advice and dissemination of knowledge in the field of materials engineering and computer technologies in engineering
  • Design and advice offices
  • Institutions designing and using computer systems in materials engineering

Specialization: Public Health

Major: Dental Hygiene

 Three-year BA graduate studies are conducted in week-day and weekend modules. The programme of studies is largely based on the experiences of other countries – members of the European Union.

 Graduates of Public Health specialization with a major in Dental Hygiene are thoroughly prepared, both theoretically and practically, for the performing of various functions in the field of the promotion and protection of health, as well as medical prophylaxis. In particular, these studies prepare students for the work in dental treatment institutions, in the position of a dental hygienist, dealing with dental prophylaxis together with the performance, under a doctor’s supervision, of some clinical procedures. Thanks to the acquired knowledge and expertise, the graduates can obtain employment in state, local authority, public and private institutions engaged in the promotion and protection of health as well as medical prophylaxis.

 The dental hygienist educated so well will no doubt be of great support to the dentist and affect significantly the effectiveness of work in a dentist’s office.

 Specialization: Environmental Protection

Major: Nature and Landscape Conservation

 The graduates of Environmental Protection specialization obtain a degree in engineering. They acquire knowledge and skills in the field of: mathematical and natural sciences; earth science; human influence on the environment; toxicology; environmental management and planning; atmosphere, hydrosphere and pedosphere dangers; nature protection; water resources management; municipal, industrial and agricultural waste management; legal and economic aspects of the environmental protection. Field work and professional training constitute a significant element of the studies. This allows students to master practical skills, alongside theoretical knowledge.

The acquired knowledge and skills will allow graduates to:

  • Understand the processes and phenomena taking place in the biotic and abiotic environments and their mutual relations
  • Foresee the natural and anthropogenic changes taking place in the environment and undertake actions aiming to eliminate or limit the disadvantageous effects of those changes
  • Understand the social, legal and economic mechanisms of human activity in the environment
  • Understand and implement the principles of balanced development

 The broad range of the subjects studied does not limit the mobility of the students and allows them to adjust themselves to the contemporary labour market and the requirements of employers.

 The graduates of this specialization are prepared for work in various institutions and companies engaged in the broadly understood environmental protection, primarily in:

  • State administrative and local authorities of various levels engaged in environmental protection, land management and development, for example: the Departments of Environmental Protection, the Departments of Development in various offices, national parks, landscape parks, etc.
  • Institutions monitoring and evaluating the condition of the environment, for example in the onal Inspection of the Environmental Protection, or National Sanitary Inspection
  • Institutions and companies engaged in the preparation of the reports of human effects on the environment; designing of environmental protection systems; technical, organizational, legal and economic advising in the field of environmental protection; integrated environment management

 Moreover, the graduates are prepared to take charge of independent positions in the departments of environmental protection in industry, agriculture, health care, and service sector. They can also, after satisfying the requirements specified by separate regulations, undertake jobs in education and other educational institutions. 

Students who major in Nature and Landscape Conservation gain, apart from the knowledge and skills described in the specialization graduate profile, thorough knowledge in the field of bio- and geo-variety as well as preservation of landscape values. They can also assess the values of the environment and the existing possibility of implementing institutional forms of its protection. What is more, they acquire skills to use the value of nature for the benefit and development of local communities, as well as knowledge in the field of programmes aimed at the protection of ecosystems and endangered species that are carried out by Poland as part of international cooperation. A major in Nature and Landscape Conservation also offers an opportunity to extend knowledge in the area of assessment of the conditions and dangers of individual components of the environment (air, water, soil, biotic environment); it also teaches the undertaking of specific actions that aim to properly shape the environment in accordance with the principles of balanced development. Those graduating in this field also gain skills to properly assess cartographic materials, geotechnical analyses, statements of water management conditions, results of air, water and soil tests. They can also assess the impact of planning decisions on the environment. Moreover, they are prepared to make and assess local and regional environmental protection programmes.
